Figure 1: A scheme of proposed contribution of astrocytes to neurodegeneration in α-synucleinopathy. α-Synuclein (α-SYN) aggregates, the major hallmark of the Parkinson's disease, spread from neurons to neighboring astrocytes, where they possibly impair physiological function of these cells. Astrocytes acquire neurotoxic features via impaired release of neurotrophic factors and augmented inflammatory response.
